Camping Popcorn - Sweet and Salty!

You don’t have to leave behind your favourite snack when heading outdoors! Here’s how to make popcorn on your camp stove, with 2 flavour combos to try!

Here’s a fun snack recipe from the summer that we created in collaboration with Jetboil! There’s tons of flavour combinations you could use but I’ve included two below, one salty and one sweet, for you to try. Enjoy around the campfire, while you watch the sunset or as a mid-day pick-me-up!

What’s your go-to snack?

It definitely depends on the situation or the activity for me, which I’m sure a lot of you can relate to. If I’m just wanting to chill and take it easy, popcorn is definitely one of my favourites.

We used to buy a lot of bagged flavoured popcorn from the store (and honestly still do now and then - nothing wrong with convenience foods right!) but they can get pretty expensive if you buy them often. So last summer I decided to give it a go at creating my own favourite popcorn flavours while camping. My favs are kettle corn and garlic parmesan - hence the flavours included in this recipe post!

The process

Making your own camp popcorn is actually surprisingly easy! All you need is your camp stove, a small/medium pot, popcorn kernels and some canola oil. Oh, and whatever flavours you want!

You’ll start by putting 1-2 Tbsp of canola oil in the pot, just enough to cover the bottom completely. Then add just enough popcorn kernels to cover the bottom of the pot. Note: if you overfill the pot with kernels, they are more likely to burn. So if you’re unsure, always put a little less kernels in than you think. This may take a few tries to get right as every camp pot is a little different in size!

Cover and cook over a low heat until the kernels have popped. Sometimes not every kernel pops, so if the majority have popped, take it off the heat. I’ve made the mistake of cooking it for too long, in attempt of getting every last kernel to pop, and ended up burning the majority of the batch… oops.

Add your flavourings quickly after you take the popcorn off the heat, this helps the flavourings stick better to the popcorn. If it cools down too much, the flavourings will just fall off. Stir and enjoy!

What are your favourite popcorn flavours? Have you tried other homemade popcorn flavourings? Let me know below, I’m always looking for more flavours to try!
