DIY Trail Mix - 3 Ways!

Mix and match your favourite flavours for a quick and easy snack for the trail or on-the-go travels!

A classic hiking snack, trail mix is delicious, quick, and easy to assemble at home! Store bought trail mix can often get expensive or have components in it you don’t like (*cough* too many raisins *cough*). Making it at home means you get to choose exactly what you like and how much! If you don’t know where to start, I have included 3 fun and delicious trail mix recipes for you to try out!

Wondering how to make a homemade trail mix? Let me walk you through the basic ingredients:

Nuts

  • peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, etc.

Seeds

  • pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Dried Fruit

  • raisins, cranberries, blueberries, apricots, pineapple, banana, coconut, etc.

Add Ins

Aside from trail mix being quick, easy, delicious, and nutritious, it’s also FUN! You can get creative and playful with what you add in! Some ideas for fun add ins are:

  • cereal (cheerios, chex, shreddies, etc)

  • pretzels

  • goldfish crackers

  • popcorn

  • candies (m&m’s, smarties, etc)

  • chocolate (an ESSENTIAL ingredient, if you ask me)

If you’ve read my Hikers Cookie post, you will recognize this next paragraph. But it’s good info, so I thought I would share it again!

Nutrition Nugget:

Now let’s quickly chat about snack choice for different activities.

Trail mix is a great choice for low-intensity activities, like walking/hiking, canoeing, kayaking, casual biking, etc. It is full of protein and fat provided by the nuts and seeds. Because of this, it takes longer for your body to breakdown and release energy into your system to be used by your muscles and brain. This is ideal for low-intensity activities where you body needs a steady supply of energy for 1-4+ hours.

Good choices for high-intensity activities, like running, steep incline hiking, intense biking, swimming, etc. are carbohydrate-rich snacks which provide quick, easy digestible energy. Examples are:

  • Dried fruit and fruit leather (some ideas for fruit leather flavours, here)

  • Gummies or candy

  • Fruit

  • Muffins (small)

  • Cereal

  • Sports drink/gels

Note: all ingredient measurements below are suggestions, feel free to experiment and add more or less of your favourite ingredients!
