Why oats are so awesome
Oats are one of my favourite breakfasts to bring on a camping or backpacking trip for a few reasons:
SUPER quick and easy! Literally throw together your oats and toppings of choice and just add boiling water!
Extremely versatile. The flavour combos are nearly endless! You can go for the classic cinnamon raisin or something a little more fancy like cranberry coconut.
A great balanced breakfast giving you energy for your days adventures! Adding protein and fat from nuts, seeds, and skim milk powder provides delicious flavours as well as long lasting energy for your day.
Don’t mind the brown banana… it got a little squished in the truck on the drive out. Still tasted great! I love adding fresh fruit when I can!
If you don’t want to carry fresh fruit in your backpack (or don’t have the space), use dehydrated fruit and it will rehydrate when you add the boiling water. My favs are apple slices and banana chips :) YUM.
Did you know?
Oats are naturally gluten-free, and therefore can be enjoyed by those who have a gluten intolerance or Celiac disease. HOWEVER, oats may be processed in a facility that processes other foods that contain gluten, and may be contaminated with gluten. If this is a concern for you, make sure to look for “gluten-free” or “processed in a gluten-free facility” to ensure there is no cross-contamination of the oats.
If you’re looking for a reliable gluten-free oats brand, check out Stoked Oats. You can use my discount code, CAMPKITCHEN10, for 10% off when ordering through their website. They’re an Alberta based company that source the majority of their ingredients from different Canadian provinces. And they got tons of fun flavours (and even some granola) to choose from!
Don’t have time or all the ingredients to mix your own oats? No worries! You can also use the flavoured oatmeal packets that you can buy from the grocery store! They’re already flavoured so they’re delicious on their own or with some added toppings! We often use them and then add some extra peanut butter and banana.
