Swiss Cheese & Caramelized Onion Burger

Melted cheese, caramelized onions, and fresh arugula, you'll want to sink your teeth into this classic BBQ meal!

It may not be outdoor BBQ season right now but, in my opinion, burger season is year round.

This delicious Swiss and caramelized onion burger recipe was created for our friends at Eureka Camping this past summer. It’s simple, easy, and delicious! Serve with fries, potato wedges, or whatever your favourite side to burgers may be!

Ingredients

Here’s your grocery list:

  • buns - I love a good pretzel or brioche bun with my burgers. I find them much more filling so make sure you come with an appetite!

  • burger patties - can be homemade or store-bought. If homemade, prepping them ahead of time and storing in your cooler makes for less mess and work when out camping.

  • cheese - I chose Swiss for this recipe but use whatever you like best.

  • onions - yellow or red, both work!

  • arugula - a little spicy and pairs well with Swiss and caramelized onions, in my opinion. If you’re not a fan, lettuce or spinach works just fine!

  • tomato - fun fact: I used to HATE tomatoes. But slowly over the years, they’ve grown on me. I love them in a burger because they add some freshness and acidity to balance out the cheese and meat.

  • sauces - I tend to keep it pretty simple while camping and went for the classic mayo + bbq sauce combo.

Instructions

In a medium pan, start by caramelizing onions in a little butter on low heat until perfectly golden. Then grill the burgers, can be homemade or store-bought, on medium-high heat, flipping a few times until charred on both sides and cooked through. Alternatively, you can pan-fry them in a cast iron skillet.

Top with a slice of Swiss cheese near the end and let that melt for a couple minutes. TIP: you can use a heat resistant bowl (flipped upside down) to cover the burgers and create some steam to help melt the cheese faster.

You can toast the bun at the same time too. Then layer the bun with mayo, bbq sauce, the burger patty, onions, arugula, and fresh tomato slices.

Enjoy!
