Simple Steak Sandwich
A perfect quick meal to be enjoyed at home or on the road! Juicy steak strips, caramelized onions, shredded cheese and an easy herb butter. A great way to use up leftover steak too!
We first made this easy meal when out skiing with friends at Lake Louise ski resort at the back of their truck during our lunch break. If you’ve skied at resorts before, you know the the food is usually quite pricey and, most of the time, nothing you couldn’t make yourself (we’re talking chicken strips, hotdogs, burgers, chilli, etc.). So we decided to save some money and have fun by cooking our own gourmet ski lunch as a mini tailgate party.
After that fun day, I thought this recipe is just too easy and delicious not to share with you guys! I used my Eureka Camp Grill to cook everything, but you could just as easily use a camp stove and pan instead.
Ingredient List
The ingredient list is kept short on purpose, so that you can spend less time prepping and cooking, and more time enjoying whatever you’re doing that day! All you’ll need is:
Your choice of steak (leftovers work great too!) and steak spice (I like Montreal steak spice by Club House)
Onions, cut into large rings to prevent them from falling through the grill
A little olive oil (to cook onions with)
Shredded cheese (I used Monterey Jack with jalapeños - a little extra kick from the jalapeños is delicious!)
Baguette (or whatever bread you desire)
Butter, fresh herbs (like parsley or dill) and fresh garlic. To save on time, make the herb butter ahead of time and store in the fridge or cooler until needed.
Enjoy, friends!

Simple Steak Sandwich
Ingredients
- 1-2 medium sized steaks
- your favourite steak spice (e.g. Club House Montreal Steak Spice)
- 1 baguette loaf
- 2 small onions, cut into large rings
- handful of shredded cheese (Monterey Jack, mozzarella, asiago, etc.)
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1-2 garlic cloves, diced
- handful of fresh herbs (parsley, dill, etc.), chopped
Instructions
- Cut the onions into large rings (this will help prevent them from falling through the grill). Drizzle with a little olive oil and grill on medium heat until soft.
- Season the steak then grill on medium-high heat until the desired doneness (for medium-rare, grill 3-5 minutes each side). Remove from heat and let rest for a few minutes, then slice thinly.
- Prepare herb butter (can be done at home ahead of time). Add chopped garlic and fresh herbs to softened butter and mix well.* Shred cheese.
- Spread herb butter onto baguette loaf, top with grilled onions, sliced steak and shredded cheese.
Notes
*You can definitely prepare the herb butter ahead of time and store in fridge/cooler until needed.
