Think French toast but a little more gourmet.

French toast roll-ups can be stuffed with whatever fillings your heart desires, sweet or savoury, dipped in an egg wash and then pan fried to perfection. They’re fun and delicious, and sure to impress your camping guests!

Included in this post are two versions: raspberry cream cheese and ham and cheese. No matter what you’re craving, you’ll have an option to satisfy both those salty and sweet tooths around camp!

Ingredients

  • Bread – Regular white bread works great in this recipe, but if you have a favorite bread that you always have with you, feel free to try it out with that! Just make sure it can be flattened and rolled up without falling apart (a very dense seedy bread may break in this case).

  • Eggs – For the egg wash. Make sure they’re whisked together well; you can add a dash of milk to help with this too.

  • Raspberry jam – Substitute for any of your favourite fruit jams or fresh fruit sliced up finely.

  • Cream cheese – To add a rich and creamy filling to the sweet roll-up. Can substitute with Nutella, peanut butter, or slices of Brie cheese.

  • Ham – Deli ham works best in my opinion, but you could also use finely sliced leftover BBQ meat or strips of crispy bacon.

  • Cheddar cheese – Sub for sliced mozzarella, gruyere, provolone, or Brie cheese. You can’t go wrong with more cheese!

Instructions

  1. Start by removing the crusts from the bread slices (the crusts make it a little harder to roll up nicely). Then flatten the slices using a rolling pin until approximately ¼ inch thick. Add the fillings to one side of the slice, about 1 inch from the end. Then carefully roll up tightly and repeat with remaining bread slices.

  2. Heat a frying pan on medium heat, adding a little butter or oil to prevent sticking. In a shallow bowl, whisk the egg well.

  3. Using tongs or two forks, carefully dip the roll-ups into the egg mixture until coated and then transfer to the hot pan. Fry on all sides until golden brown and a little crispy, about 5 to 7 minutes in total.

  4. Roll the raspberry-cream cheese roll-ups in a cinnamon-sugar mixture immediately after frying to give just that little extra decadence (optional).

  5. Dip roll-ups in maple syrup, whipped cream, ketchup, or your favourite French toast additions.

PRO TIP: Don’t throw away the crusts! Pack them up and dry out to be used for homemade croutons or grind up for breadcrumbs. We almost always have a paper bag of dried bread pieces to use for schnitzel - my husband is Austrian and schnitzel is a staple in our house!

PRO TIP #2: If possible, get family/friends involved and create a little assembly line for each step of the recipe. Have one person rolling the bread, one filling the roll-ups, one frying, and so on. This can be a fun way of getting more people involved as well as keeping this recipe super quick!

How to Store Leftovers

If you have leftovers, make sure to let them cool to room temperature before placing them in an air-tight container and storing in the fridge or cooler for 1 to 2 days. If they are still warm when you put them away, the heat will create moisture in the container and cause the roll-ups to become soggy (not so ideal). Reheat in a pan until warmed through.
